▪️企画趣旨:
Journalistic work has long been associated with a strong sense of meaningfulness derived from public service, professional autonomy, and societal impact. However, ongoing transformations in the media industry are reshaping the ways in which meaning is constructed, experienced, and managed within news organizations. This research meeting examines the interconnections between meaningful work, datafication, and well-being in contemporary journalistic work.
Drawing on qualitative research conducted in Finnish media organizations, including interviews with journalists and newsroom managers as well as workplace observation (shadowing), Mikko Villi, Professor of Journalism Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, has been engaged in studies, which explore how data-driven practices in newsrooms influence everyday journalistic work and professional identity. The findings suggest that audience analytics and performance metrics can both strengthen and undermine experiences of meaningfulness. While data may provide concrete evidence of audience reach and impact, it can also introduce tensions between journalistic values and organizational performance expectations.
The presentation also highlights the pivotal role of middle managers in news media organizations in navigating these tensions. Positioned between strategic organizational objectives and the professional aspirations of journalists, middle managers engage in continuous emotional and relational work. They are responsible for translating journalistic and business-related goals into newsroom practices while simultaneously supporting employees’ well-being and sustaining a sense of purpose at work.
Misook Lee, Associate Professor of Journalism Studies at the University of Tokyo, will engage with Villi’s research talk from a comparative cultural perspective on the media landscapes across East Asia, including Japan. The research meeting argues that meaning in journalistic work should be understood as an emotionally negotiated and organizationally mediated phenomenon. As media organisations become increasingly datafied and market-oriented, recognizing the emotional and managerial dimensions of meaningful work is essential to promoting employee well-being, organizational resilience, and the continued societal value of journalism.
